Richard MacDonald’s “Mother & Child” captures a beautiful moment of reverie in the life of an expectant mother. While much art is created with purpose and intent, there are times when the sole intention is merely to discover what may come of the creative process. In fact, many of the artist’s greatest works have been come as a result of this straightforward approach. As MacDonald states, “Sometimes I am just composing with no particular purpose other than to explore the medium, subject, feeling and form.” Depicted with a shifted stance, and hands in her hair, “Mother & Child” underscores MacDonald’s process of becoming visually and physically aware of all aspects of his subject by sculpting from life.
